Internet Job Search - DOs and DON'Ts |
The Internet is one of the best tools you can use to find a job
as a court reporter. The two main advantages of using the
Internet as your primary job search tool are:
The quantity of information available. The Internet opens up
many more options than you would be able to find using local
sources like the newspaper or the yellow pages. Go to one of
the major search engines, like
Google, type "court
reporter job" and see how many web pages of information come up.
At this writing, there are over 52,000,000. That's a lot of information!
The ability to filter and focus. Even though there are more
than 52,000,000 web pages in the example above, it does not mean all
that information is going to help you. Search engines typically
try to provide the most relevant information first. This is a
simple way to filter out much of the unimportant information.
Later, I will tell you about a great
software program that can
help you even more, but first... the DOs and DON'Ts of online job searching.
 |
DO
use websites with both resume banks and job banks. Resume
banks allow you to post your resume for potential employers to
review. Job banks allow you to search for available positions.
One of the great things about resume banks is that many are set
up in a way that allows your resume to be indexed by search
engines. This means your resume could come up in a search
conducted by a potential employer on the major search engines, as
well as in the resume bank. |
 |
DON'T
expect employers to come to you. Actively search job
banks on a regular basis. Some job banks allow you to employ
'agents' that will monitor new postings and inform you of
positions that fit your requirements, as they are posted. Most
employers do not post new positions on a daily basis, but will
post about once a week. |
 |
DO
make direct contact with potential employers. There are
hundreds of court reporting agencies all across the United States
and around the world. Many are constantly looking for qualified
candidates to employ. My Court Reporter Job Guide contains the
most comprehensive list of court reporting agencies you can find anywhere. |
 |
DO
be selective about where you post your resume. Review
several websites carefully to make sure there are companies
specifically related to court reporting, which are posting
positions. Most sites have easy to use forms, with step-by-step
instructions, that allow you to either type your resume or paste
it into the form. Most sites will also require you to register
in order to use their service. |
 |
DO
make it as easy as possible for potential employers to get
in touch with you, when posting your resume online. Provide all
relevant contact information, including your name, address, phone
number, and email address. |
 |
DO
use special
job searcher software to save time and find
the highest paying jobs. One of the best programs I know can
search through more than 300 of the top job websites and provide
you with a list of potential employers that fit your specific profile, in
mere seconds. |
 |
DON'T
give up. Finding the right job, with a great salary
can sometimes be a frustrating and time consuming experience.
That is why I wrote the Court Reporter Job Guide. It is
chalked full of practical and useful information and hundreds of
links that can help you enjoy the High Income, Flexibility,
Independence and Security of a great court reporter job. You can have
